A new year has come, I finally trained myself to stop writing “2024” on everything, and a print run for Reanimated is on the way, which which means that I had to take a look at the cost of printing …which has gone up …a lot.
For reference, Trapped Chest is based out of Canada, which means that all the prices I am about to list are in Canadian Dollars, so knock about 30% off to get a USD or Euro price or 40% for GBP.
The Nullam Project has an MSRP of $10 and so will Reanimated …at least for the first print run. This was calculated based on my landed cost when I did my first print run in 2023. In early 2025, this cost has risen by 1/3 and it is getting harder to justify that $10 price tag.
In the coming months I will have to make some choices. It is inevitable that both core books will have to go up to $15 at some point, but I am digging in my heels for the moment. While $15 for a core book is about as cheap as they come, it is still a deal breaker for many. The question is, how much is too much? How high can prices go before nobody wants to buy the product?
This rise in cost also has me concerned about Quest Nexus, which is set to crowdfund later this year. At 368 pages, full colour, with hardcover and stitched binding, this is not going to be a cheap book. I am anticipating an MSRP of $70-80, which puts it right in line with the Pathfinder 2e Core Rulebook. Even then, I don’t anticipate great profits, unless the game absolutely explodes in popularity. Odds are, I will actually be taking a loss after factoring in the cost of marketing and professional art.
While this may seem like a lot of doom and gloom, it’s not that bad. The PDFs will remain free and I do have a day job to lean on, so I can keep the company afloat, even if it is not profitable yet, and here is hoping that one day I will hit that perfect storm and have a huge hit.
