A month after the release of Reanimated and things are starting to actually gain traction. A few reviews, an interview on EN World the windup to convention season and most surprising is people contacting me asking for review copies, which is something that I normally had to beg people to look at.
I do have to mention that there is a contact form on this site, and while the PDF versions of the games are easy enough to download for free, I am always happy to send a physical review copy out to any reviewer that asks.
Despite things starting to work out, marketing is by far the most exhausting part of the job, with social media algorithms being public enemy number one, as they tend to value spam over quality content, which puts creators in a difficult place. Do you focus on visibility or do you provide high quality posts?, and how do you deal with it when you get home from your day job and just don’t have the energy left to do any of that?
Conventions are a polar opposite to social media. While they can be tiring and expensive, people are genuinely interested in what you have to sell and upcoming products. It gets even better if you run with a group and can take some time away from the table to run demo games and RPG one shots.
Recently, I have been running booths with the Manitoba Game Designers, which are a small group that offers assistance and knowledge sharing to game designers based in Manitoba, Canada. This has not only helped with my own visibility and allowed us to split costs, but is also doing some good in the province.
The year is just starting, but I am already tired.
